In today’s digitally connected age, when most product sales are happening online, people generally have a very short attention span. This makes it very apparent that a product listed online has an accompanying description and pictures that are clear, crisp and enticing in equal measure. How people see a picture and what they see in it goes a long way in deciding whether they would want to buy that particular product or not, with research showing an unclear picture that fails to impress people in the first viewing having a drastically lesser chance of being sold.
So coming to the point, how do you really take pictures that look eye catching enough so that they have a greater chance of being sold? There are some general thumb rules that can be followed,
The product’s pictures should be clean and free from any blemishes
Today’s high resolution cameras can capture every detail about a product, even unwanted ones, like dust, temporary blemishes etc. So before taking the pictures, always clean the product with preferably a soft and clean cloth.The most appropriate for this would be cotton terry towels, while alcohol can also be used if the product’s surface is non plastic.
Choose the right background
Always use an appropriate background for your pic. For most products a white background is ideal, while for reflective and shiny products such as jewellery, a black background would be better. Also, always ensure that the background is uncluttered, this allows the focus to remain on the product itself.

Use diffused lighting instead of flash
As far as possible, avoid using flash. This is because the camera’s flash concentrates the lighting on some specific parts of the product, due to which unwanted shadows and reflections occur. In place of flash, you can use diffused lighting, diffused lighting can be achieved by placing a pure white screen or frosted glass in between the light source and the product. One can also use a lightbox to illuminate the object evenly while taking photographs.

The left picture above has been taken using flash, while the pic on the right has been taken using diffused lightning. The difference is for all of us to see, with the pic on the right noticeably much better.
Use a tripod for better stability
Always use a tripod with your camera while taking product photographs. Just using camera with your bare hands leads to a lot of cases of blurry and fuzzy pictures. A tripod keeps the camera steady. In case you do not have a tripod, set the camera up on a flat surface and preferably use the shutter timer, it will eliminate the camera shake that is so common while shooting with bare hands.

Take high resolution pictures
Try and capture high resolution pictures. While it would be great if you’re using a DSLR camera, if for some reason it’s not possible,then while using a normal camera, always use medium or high file size in the camera’s setting. This automatically takes higher resolution pictures as compared to pictures taken with the low file size setting.
Center the picture
Fill the picture frame completely with the product’s pic. For doing this, center the picture, this allows almost all the frame to be utilized by the picture. This allows the buyers to view the product pictures with greater clarity, with the minutest detail getting noticed by them.

As we can see in the above pic, the centered setting enhances the look of the product, with all the user’s focus being sure to be on the product itself, without any diversions.
Clarify the size of the product using another object as a reference
Buyers often get confused about the size of the product they are viewing. To prevent such confusions, always include one photograph that shows the correct scale of the product. This can be done by putting a coin, ruler or any other common daily use objects right next to the product. This will help give buyers a context to look at, thus helping them figure out the exact size
Take multiple shots from all angles
Shoot from all angles. Make sure that the buyers see every detail about the product. Most e- commerce sites also allow the buyers to zoom in on the products. Multiple photographs will enable the buyer to zoom in from various angles, thus helping them get the view which they want.
